Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga is a system of sequential postures, each practiced with precise alignment, specific gazing points (drishti), and a synchronized breathing technique known as ujjayi. Each asana is placed in a deliberate order to gradually strengthen and open the body, preparing it for the next posture. As a practitioner gains proficiency in one pose, they progress to the next. Typically, there is one or two challenging postures near the end of each practice, offering an opportunity to face and work through daily challenges with patience and persistence.
Mysore-style practice takes place from Sunday to Thursday, where students practice at their own pace with guidance from the teacher. On Fridays, all students come together for a Led class, following the teacher's verbal instructions as a group.
Ashtanga Shalas exist all over the world, and many practitioners travel to study with the head teacher, Sharath Jois, in Mysore, India, to deepen their practice. Through this global community, Ashtanga Yoga practitioners connect with others from around the world, sharing a common path and experience.
